The TRUE 12 Days of Christmas

Ever since moving to Atlanta, GA 16 years ago I have had to defend why I leave my Christmas decorations up until the end of twelfth night which is technically Jan 5th - morning of Jan 6th.

It's been a pet peeve of mine why southerners always take their tree down the day after Christmas. They go so far as to believe it is bad luck having any Christmas decorations what so ever in sight when ringing in the New Year.

Being raised by an English mother my traditions are the exact opposite of my neighbors. My mom didn't give me the religious explanation I found on the Internet. Instead she made mention of all the grandeur held throughout the gilded ages and how every night someone of great wealth hosted a ball, which led to the grandest ball of all on Jan 5th. It was unheard of in our house to take Christmas decorations down before the end of 12th night.

However I do believe it is every one's right to celebrate this personal holiday as they see fit as long as it doesn't infringe upon the rights of others. So with that said and a smile on my face I will continue to turn on my Christmas lights every night and not a single ornament or decoration will be boxed up until Jan 6th!

One of the best articles I found on the true definition of The Twelve Days of Christmas
